The Austin Modern Home Tour is celebrating its 11th year, and we are thrilled to be part of it! The Modern Home Tour is a great opportunity to meet the architects, designers, and homeowners behind some of Austin’s most amazing modern residences. This year Cornerstone Architects designed the homes at 1456 Wild Basin Ledge and 5503 Lakemoore Drive. Nestled within the trees, high upon a lot in the Wild Basin area of Westlake is a contemporary home with mid-century modern flair. As the personal home of architect, Bob Wetmore, design was obviously key. Having designed his own homes in the past, this time the focus was on creating all aspects of the house based on the new empty-nest phase of life for he and his wife.
They searched for a property that met the following goals: predominately a south facing and sloping lot with space for the house on the uphill side, a view of the hill country and ideally downtown Austin, and the advantage of a channeled valley that would direct summer breezes up across the front of the future home and screened living area. After visiting several potential properties, they found the perfect sloping lot which also offered views to both downtown Austin and the adjacent hill sides.
In planning the design for their final home, emphasis was placed on thinking through how to utilize both indoor and outdoor spaces. With the home elevated, the design lives forward-facing taking advantage of gorgeous views in the distance while maintaining privacy from neighbors and the street below. A channeled valley carries breezes up and through the screened in porch, keeping it a comfortable and pleasant retreat during the hot Texas afternoons. Bringing the pool up to the home also allows for the cooling evaporative effects as the summer breezes blow over the pool to the house. Having designed many of the pools in their previous homes, the architect honed in on what was needed from its base utilitarian and aesthetic aspects. They no longer needed a pool for kids to play in, but rather a 45’ lap lane, spa and beach area for enjoyment and relaxation. A remote grilling area keeps smoke away from the home and provides a visual anchor to the yard, while providing the perfect space for entertaining guests.
With a nod to mid-century modern architecture, the home blends the style with more contemporary elements. The interiors are designed with small details such as the wainscot at the foyer being an extension of the lower stair landing, each tread defining a detailed trim piece in the wainscot.
The home supports their new empty-nest lifestyle and focuses on a very open flow and layout providing space for entertaining, all while capitalizing on gorgeous views from throughout the home.
